In the time immediately before the First World War, when Colbert Coldwell and Benjamin Arthur Banker were striving to establish a real estate business, San Francisco was hardly the booming market it is today. The city’s western half was shrub-covered dunes. Downtown business practices were nearly as informal as they’d been during the Gold Rush. Much of the city was still in ruins from the 1906 earthquake.

Unscrupulous businessmen were out to take advantage of the situation. In an industry where straight dealing had become optional, Coldwell and Banker saw an opportunity to distinguish themselves by offering honest, knowledgeable and competent real estate services, bringing much-needed integrity to the profession.
